Profile

 Professor Dr Mohd Omar Ab Kadir   began his higher education locally at University Institute Technology MARA, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,  earning  a Diploma in Industrial Chemistry  in 1977. The excellent academic achievements won him a scholarship from  PETRONAS (National Petroleum Company) to proceed  with his education in the United States in the area of Chemical Engineering.  He was admitted to the Department  of Chemical Engineering in Mississippi State University (MSU), USA in May 1978 and completed his degree in December 1979. He continued with his graduate studies at the same university (MSU) conducting research on the production of gasohol from corn using a pilot  scale distillationprocess during which  he also received  Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Fellowship.  After completion of his MSc programme in 1982, he went on for his doctoral programme in Michigan Technological University, USA, in  Chemical Engineering in 1984. The doctoral research was both practical and theoretical research in turbulence mixing and scale up in deep tank water treatment reactors and he discovered a formula on turbulence with a number called  ‘Omar Number’.  During the same period, he was involved in research with the US Army Corp of Engineers and was awarded  the AMOCO (American Oil Company) Fellowship.  He was also a summer camp training teacher for high school students organized by Michigan Technological University. He graduated with a doctorate in Chemical Engineering in 1989 and returned to Malaysia to commence teaching at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang.  He held a lecturer post from May 1989, after which he was promoted to Associate Professor in August 1994.  His career saw him being conferred full Professorship (Gred C) in June 2000 and Professor Grade B in  2006. He achieved the highest Professor Gred  A in 2008. He was the university senate member (top management decision making body of the university) from 1993-1996, 2002 to 2006 and 2011 to 2014 and panel member in the professorial board at the university for (2009 to 2013).

In 2004, 2005 and 2007, he was invited to teach at Metropolia University (previously known  as Evtek University), in Helsinki, Finland for 2-3 weeks of intensive teaching on the subject of Environment. Since 1990 he collaborated with the Japanese Society for the Promotion of science (JSPS) in supercritical fluid at Dept of Chemical Engineering, Tohuku University, Sendai, Japan and Osaka Gas Company  in biogas research. In 1997, he single handedly established a new programme called Environmental Technology (undergraduate and 2001 the graduate programmes) at The School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang that embraces the  subjects of Chemical Engineering and Applied Sciences for technologist. It has been about 19 years and almost all of the students graduated have established career opportunities or  form their own companies, with decent income. Majority  of the lecturers teaching under the Environmental Technology Programme were also  his students. Over the  teaching career, he had graduated 34 doctoral, 25 MSc students, locals and foreigners (Bangladesh , China, Gambia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, India, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Vietnam and Yemen), published over 200 articles in journals and proceedings, appointed   as consultants, won invention awards and was invited as plenary speakers and lecturers in his area of expertise.

Many organizations have placed high regards and recognition to the expertise of the nominee, that includes appointing him as consultant such as by  local agencies,  The Felda Palm Industries (USD 1,100,000), Sime Barby Berhad (USD 1,000,000), Construction Industry Board of Malaysia (USD 300,000), and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (USD 540000).   There have been other grants/consultancies from multinational companies such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) (M) Sdn Bhd,  AMOCO (M) Sdn, TORAY (M) Sdn Bhd,  Proctor and Gamble(M)  Sdn Bhd,   BASF (M) Sdn Bhd, Schaefer Honig (M) Sdn Bhd,  Mattel (M) Sdn Bhd and Huntsman(M) Sdn Bhd   on environmental related issues ranging from wastewater treatment  to schedule waste handling. The nominee is currently  active on the international scale in the ISO 14000 TC207 Environmental Management working group SC ISO / TC207 / SC7 Strategic Plan, Standards Development for GHG Management and Related Issues.

The nominee has six patents including the extraction of palm oil using carbon dioxide super critical fluid extraction and removal of testa from plam kernels. He is also the chemical engineering programme auditor for various universities namely Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMap), University Technology Malaysia (UTM), University Technology Petronas (UTP), Malaysian Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (MICET), University Institute of Technology Malaysia (UiTM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).  The nominee has brought  more than USD 800,000 worth  of consultancy grants into USAINS Holdings, a business arm of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. He was presented the “Millionaires Club Award in  2004 and 2008” for  his resourcefulness in  bringing  these funds  to the university. He initiated the environmental studies during the Hajj season in Mecca and Madinah in 2006/2007, Saudi Arabia to identify and  find solutions to problems faced by  the pilgrims with regards to toilet facilities, slaughter house and solid waste management’s.   He has also been invited as  keynote speakers  to  various international conferences. Currently he is actively contributing his expertise at the university level especially in improving the standards of research, post graduate programs and consultancy.   He is very generous with knowledge and imbued in the students the resilience in research in order  to be successful. He is a well known figure in SC-CO2 research  in Malaysia as well as in Italy, France, Germany and  Japan. In Malaysia, the nominee is a pioneer in  SC-CO2 technology  who introduced supercritical fluid technology to Malaysia  back in the early 1990’s.

Professor Dr Mohd Omar Ab Kadir is endowed with   self-determination, self-assurance and resourceful while gifted with  great foresight and practical approaches  that sway towards problem solving and  benefits  to the country and the environment. He has contributed tremendously in the development of innovative research for cleaner technology as well as  many years of  unfaltering effort  to improve the environment. He sets  the  perfect example and inspiration  to young researchers  who aspire to be innovative and  contribute to the society.  The nominee is a remarkably brilliant researcher and teacher, possessing an acutely  analytical mind and  of high intellect.
